“GLA’s membership hovers around 30, with a core group of 12 dedicated members, both students and faculty. We represent all gay and lesbian students (Whitman’s largest minority group, between 60-100) people and our activities are aimed at helping Whitman achieve an environment perceived as safe to come out in,” stated the budget request form for Whitman Gay and Lesbian association in 1991. The group had only been around for a short period of time, but had already found its numbers swelling and its resources exhausted. GLA requested a 26% increase in their budget in order to bring speakers to campus, fund the annual LesBiGay week, and inform the campus on GLBTQ issues.
